JKD Concepts
What is Jeet Kune Do?
Jeet Kune Do is the late Bruce Lee's result of many years study and research into the many martial arts systems throughout the world.
Translated it means -"way of the intercepting fist", unlike other martial arts there are no restrictions on rules or techniques that have a distinctive method of fighting. Jeet Kune Do utilises all ways and means to serve it's purpose. it has no boundaries, therefore possesses everything, however within its creation possesses nothing.
Many people in the past have tried to put a definition on JKD, by means of a style i.e., Bruce Lee's Kung Fu, Bruce Lee's Kickboxing, Bruce Lee's this 'an' that
To put a name tag or label on this art is to totally miss its meaning, the concepts are only that.. concepts and must not be confined with a system.
To fully understand this, the martial art practitioner must be able to unify without distinction.
Bruce lee was quoted many time in saying " Knowledge in martial arts ultimately means self knowledge".
Jeet Kune Do is not a modification neither is it an invention of any other style to set it above any other method. It is however, a concept to allow people to express themselves outside the limitations of styles, patterns and methodology.
Bruce Lee also emphasised that Jeet Kune Do is merely a name, a mirror in which we see ourselves. It is like a boat, you see it cross the river it has then served its purpose and should be discarded until you need it again.
Please note - there are many text reference books available on Jeet Kune Do, should you require any information on titles etc, please don't hesitate to contact me, and I will be happy to help.

JKD Concepts Vs JKD Nucleus
It is said that the individual who possesses the right blend of attributes and strategy will have the foundation for the ultimate fighting system. It was arguable that Bruce Lee has developed the ultimate fighting system. The general objective of the art was to hit without being hit! i.e. - to intercept an attack thus avoiding any damage, neutralising the opponents offence whist gaining an opening to strike.
Bruce Lee's intercepting fist method, i.e. JKD evolved largely from fencing, in which the practitioner would put his strong side forward as to prepare to intercept an attack.
To be able to intercept you must work on your speed, sensitivity and strength as these are very important attributes for success.
With personal attributes for kicking for instance the individual would be very successful at Taekwondo, when kicking distance is available.
Again if the individual was short and stocky for instance with very inflexible legs then Taekwondo would be impracticable choice, as he may be more suited to a grappling type art such as ju-jitsu.
Whilst we can agree that Bruce Lee had the attributes to make JKD successful it is unlikely that we can mimic that. Therefore an alternative strategy would be launched.
The now famous saying "using no way as ways" riddle best exemplifies this alternate method.
Whatever the culture it has a preferred method of defence, which in a lot of ways is unique to that particular country. We are fully aware that each country uses a particular language. To be a traveler of the world you must master a means of communications that can be understood by each group.
With this thought in our minds how can we learn just one style and be expected to compete with all other stylists?
By using "no way as way" we can identify with all, for example we are free to utilise Filipino trapping skills, thai kicking skills, western boxing skills, brazilian ju-jitsu skills, russian sombo skills, the list goes on.
This is JKD concepts.
Neither is right or wrong, you just need to be successful in matching your chosen strategy to your personal attributes. Once you have reached your synthesis of strategy and attributes you will need to trim the nonessentials that may interfere with the economy of your movements.
